This evening at 6:34 PM. a call came in reporting a small Outside Fire on Sandy Hook Rd.
Lt. 11 (A. Martin) on Support 11-7 asked for further information from the Washington County Emergency Communications Center while he was enroute. Further calls coming in where reporting a small fire possible near the foot bridge crossing over the Potomac River to Harper’s Ferry Wv.
Company 11 units arrived to find a fire on the train bridge. Lt. 11 (A. Martin) establish Command and requested Jefferson County Wv. company 1 to assist from their end of the bridge and CSX railway to be notified of the fire and to have all train traffic in the area stopped.
Crews from company 11 (Potomac Valley) and company 8 (Boonsboro-Rohrersville) entered the train bridge at the tunnel with Chief 11 (R. Otzelberger Jr.) as Operations. Jefferson County company 1 (Friendship Fire Company) also entered the train tracks from the train station in Harper’s Ferry. Crews initial carried bladder bags and Indian Cans up to the fire, but do to the number of railroad ties on fire, Hoselines were pulled and stretched onto the bridge to control and contain the fire.
Crews worked for an hour to control, contain and extinguish the fire involving 4 railroad ties in the middle of the bridge. Train traffic continued to be stopped until all personnel, Hoselines and equipment were clear of the train tracks and a CSX Railway representative was on site to inspect the bridge and area of the burned out ties.
