Train Bridge Fire

This afternoon at 3:43 PM, Company 11 was alerted for a Fire on the Train Bridge crossing the Potomac River.  Support 11-0 (FF McMillen)  arrived to find  railroad ties on the bridge on fire. Brush 11 crew of 2 (FAO Hunter)  arrived shortly after 11-0.

The 3 person crew began filling Bladder Bags off of Brush 11 and began  the hike  up to the track bed. Upon arrival the crew incountered heavy smoke and a wind driven fire involving a large number of railroad ties. Brush 11 established “Sandy Hook Rd Command” and requested additional units to assist.

Having a wind driven fire, the crew back away and requested Engine-Tanker 8 (Boonsboro Fire) to pull a attack line upon arrival.  Engine-Tanker 8 arrived and pulled just past the bridge were a crew from Company 11 and Frederick Engine 51 (arriving simultaneously with ET8) pulled the attack line up onto the bridge and advanced it towards the fire. Engine 1-1 (Sharpsburg Fire) arriving next proceeded up to the track bed and assisted crews with fire attack. During  the Incident having crews working above tbe Potomac River,  a Boat Assignment was requested incase personnel fell from the bridge into the water below. This assignment  Brought Boat 11-1 along with other neighboring Boats to the scene.

During the 4 hours crews worked to extinguish the fire, hit hotshots and conduct overhaul, units From Jefferson County Wv, Frederick County MD, Loudoun County VA,  Washington County  DES ( Division of Emergency Services) Rehab Unit and Safety Officers and Command Staff assisted on the Incident  in all approximately 50 personnel worked the Incident.  At 8:20 PM “Sandy Hook Rd Command ” advised the Fire was out, scene turned over to CSX Officials and Fire Units were inservice  returning to their stations. We would like to THANK the following Companies/departments for responding and assisting on this Incident.
